Cancer Wellness Community

Living with cancer is difficult. We make it easier.

Remember the old saying, “can’t teach an old dog a new trick?” Well I have first hand experience that breaks that myth. It’s been my honor to be the facilitator of a men’s group for cancer survivors over the past three years. Remember, men aren’t supposed to show feelings or go deep into the uncharted territory of emotions. WOW, these guys have blown that idea out of the water. The current 12 men who participate in our group (and past participants who have since passed on) have found an amazing camaraderie that has allowed them to find strength, safety, support, humor, and honor in dealing with the terrible disease of cancer. All the men admit that if there was even one woman in the group their participation, and therefore, experience would be very different. These men have found a way to share their deepest feelings and fears and come away with a sense of brotherhood and support they had not had before. Let’s face it; they really don’t want a woman in the room so they can tell their dirty little jokes to each other. – AC

Ary, thanks for sharing this. I have had 3 very powerful sharing groups with men, and they too have been fantastic. Keep up the good work. Do you happen to know of any research that validates 'just being present" with someone is a help to them? I am a volunteer at hospice, and they keep saying that, and I too believe it to be true - I'm just looking for the evidence to support the notion! Dick

This is fabulous to hear. Its great that men have a safe place to explore their feelings, and I'm sure that it also helps them to communicate this in their relationships... (from Kez.....a woman's perspective!)
